"Memorial Day is a time to take stock of the present, reflect on the past, and renew our commitment to the future of America," President Ronald Regan said in his May, 1983 Memorial Day address.

"At many cemeteries, the graves of the fallen are increasingly forgotten. Most people no longer remember the proper flag etiquette for the day."Some even think the day is for honoring any and all dead, and not just those fallen in service to our country."

Efforts have been made by nine-county Bay Area Boy Scout of America councils to reinforce the traditional meaning and observance of Memorial Day. One such effort has been that of roughtly 2,500 Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing Crews, Girl Scouts of Bay Area organised by BSA Pacific Skyline Council and lead by scout leader Keith Black in organizing to place flags at each of 138,031 graves markers at this 161-acre Golden Gate National Cemetery as an annual Good Turn.

Troop 33 of BSA Pacific Skyline Council Troop 33 is sponsored by the Los Altos United Methodist Church in Los Altos, California, and has been active for over 50 years. Over 100 Scouts are active in the main troop in nine patrols, and approximately another 20 Scouts participate through Venturing Crew (a program for teenager scouts). Troop meeting weekly from 7:30 – 8:30 pm on Tuesdays at Creekside Center, Los Altos United Methodist Church (corner of Foothill Blvd and Magdalena Ave., Los Altos, CA)

Venturing Leadership Skills Course VLSC-WR3-08-01 (2)

VLSC (Venturing Leadership Skills Course) is the first level leadership development course for Venturers in the Boy Scouts of America's Venturing program for older youth (14-21). Unlike other youth development courses of the BSA, all Venturers in a crew are expected to participate in the course, not just the crew officers. While the course is expected to be put on by a crew (ideally by the officers and adult advisors. This training course VLSC-WR03-08-01 is a joint effort of Venturing Crews C-501 and C-179 of Santa Clara County Council.
