Bark In The Park San Jose 2009 (1)

This 12th event "Bark in the Park 2009" is the largest dog festival in the US with over 3500 dogs and 14,000 humans enjoying this family oriented, all-day event. Located in an expansive, tree lined William Street Park, this fun day features contests, music, celebrities, demonstrations, dog-related vendors and services, kids activities. "Bark in the Park" is a fundraising event hosted by the Naglee Park neighborhood's Campus Community Association (CCA). All proceeds benefit the CCA, Humane Society Silicon Valley and San Jose Animal Care Center.

The area was first settled in 1797, when the town of San Jose moved somewhat inland from its original location on the banks of the Guadalupe River. The area was a typical small city downtown until the aggressive expansion of San Jose into surrounding areas led by A. P. Hamann forced city spending to the outlying areas and led to downtown's decline. In the 1980s, mayor Tom McEnery began a program with the SJ Redevelopment Agency that has spent apprximately $1.7 billion to revitalize the downtown area and surrounding neighborhoods as part of the Strong Neighborhood Initiative program.

The Veterans Memorial, located on Park Avenue at the Guadalupe River, is an enduring tribute to the men and women who have served our country in peacetime and in time of war. The Veterans Memorial consists of 76 flags on 30 ft. steel poles, representative of military personnel in formation. They also reflect the tiers of white headstones in a military cemetery.

Guadalupe River Park is a three-mile ribbon of park land that runs along the banks of the Guadalupe River in the heart of downtown San Jose from Highway 880 at the north, to Highway 280 at the south. Christmas In The Park at San Jose (6)

The Christmas in the Park tradition began in 1950 as a small holiday display. Don Lima, a local community leader, placed animated characters in front of his business on Willow Street in San Jose, drawing spectators, young and old. Each year, the display grew in size and became so popular with the San Jose community that a bumper-to-bumper traffic jam clogged the streets. In the early 1980’s, Lima gathered a group of community leaders to request that the City move the display to the downtown park now known as Plaza de Cesar Chavez.

Founded in 1975, Evergreen Valley College (EVC) is an established vibrant community college located on a picturesque 175-acre site in the southeastern foothills of San José, Santa Clara County, California. EVC is relatively close to downtown San José. As of Fall 2008, EVC enrolls more than 8,000 students annually from over 70 countries. The rich culture of the college makes it one of the most diverse student bodies within the California Community College System.

The San Jose Flea Market, located in the heart of the Silicon Valley, was founded by George Bumb Sr. in March 1960. You'll find an enormous variety of collectibles,... arts, crafts, comic books, belt buckles, jewelry, and more. You'll see a huge selection of fashion clothing, walking shoes, fine furniture, and tools-from bonsai pruning shears to power miters. Now, the San Jose Flea Market is the largest open-air market in the U.S. and has become a California landmark with over four million visitors each year.

Mexican Heritage Plaza (0)

The Mexican Heritage Plaza is a museum and cultural center in San José, California that opened in 1999. It is operated by the Mexican Heritage Corp., which has sponsored the International Mariachi Festival and Conference every summer since 1992. In addition to the La Galeria Museum, the plaza includes a 500-seat theater, gardens, classrooms, and meeting spaces.

Alviso Township (3)

Alviso was first settled in the 1700s. The community was named for Ignacio Alviso, the son of Corporal Domingo Alviso, one of the original members of the Anza expedition. The city was incorporated on March 4, 1852, and ceased to exist when it was consolidated with the city of San José on March 12, 1968. The city's final census was in 1960 when it recorded a population of 1,174. Originally, Alviso was a boating and shipping port, the primary transportation link for the city of San José. That usage declined with the growth in railroad transportation between San Francisco and San José.

"Little Saigon" is a name given to any of several overseas Vietnamese refugees, immigrants and descendant communities outside Vietnam, usually in the US. Saigon is the former name of the capital of the former South Vietnam, where a large number of first-generation Vietnamese immigrants originate. The well-established and largest Vietnamese-American enclaves are located in Westminster, San Jose; Houston, and smaller communities are in San Francisco, San Diego, Sacramento, Orlando, Las Vegas, Boston, Bellaire in Houston, and Honolulu.
